ABOUT THE WORKS
BIO-BASED RESIN
Bio-based resin is a material of contrasts - light yet strong. Made partly from renewable biological resources and recycled plastic, it offers a more conscious alternative to conventional resin while opening up unique possibilities for form and expression.
The bio-based resin I use for all my Waves.STUDIO objects is made partly from renewable biological resources, including plant-based materials, as well as third-generation plastic waste that can no longer be recycled and would otherwise be discarded. Compared to conventional resins, it requires significantly less energy to produce.
The resin is manufactured by a family-owned company in France under energy-efficient conditions before making its way to my studio in Aarhus, Denmark. There, the slow and manual part of the journey begins.
Each piece is created entirely by hand. I use no heat, machinery, or energy-intensive processes - only time, my own two hands, and the material itself. Once shaped, the resin is left to cure naturally over a period of two to three weeks. Rather than forcing the material into a predetermined form, I allow it to respond, settle, and reveal its own character. Small variations and imperfections are not flaws to be eliminated, but reminders of the process.
Bio-based resin is a material with a mind of its own. Its curing time changes with temperature, humidity and season, requiring a slower and more mindful approach. Rather than controlling each result, I work in dialogue with the material, adapting to its natural rhythm. Before the resin cures, I brush patterns and textures into the surface. While certain elements can be controlled, the material always retains an element of unpredictability. For me, this is what makes the process so rewarding. The unexpected details and imperfections are part of what gives each object its unique character.
The material is unpredictable; it almost has a life of its own. Part of the challenge has been learning patience with it, as it doesn't always behave as expected.
The curing time changes with temperature and seasons, so it must be treated like a living, organic material. Before it cures, the patterns are brushed on so I can control how the layers develop and create the beautiful effects you see in the pictures. But this unpredictability is precisely what makes the work so fascinating and vibrant.
Waves.STUDIO designs sculptural lamps made of bio-based resin. The interesting thing about the material is that when the light shines through it, you suddenly discover a lot of beautiful, organic patterns that give each lamp its very own soul. The combination of the organic shape and the transparent material makes the lamps seem almost weightless, a bit like soft, floating clouds.

When are new designs released?
New Waves.STUDIO designs are released throughout the year as they are completed. Each piece is developed at its own pace, with a focus on craftsmanship, material exploration, and artistic expression rather than fixed production schedules.
